NHS DIABETIC SCREENING

At Ward Opticians, we are accredited NHS diabetic eye screening centers.

DIABETIC EYE SCREENING

Diabetic eye screening is important in helping to prevent loss of sight. Patients with Diabetes are at a risk of damage to their eyes from Diabetic Retinopathy.

  • Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition that occurs when Diabetes affects small blood vessels, damaging the part of the eye called the retina. Diabetic Retinopathy can cause the blood vessels in the retina to leak or become blocked, which can affect vision.
  • Untreated Diabetic Retinopathy is one of the most common causes of loss of sight, therefore it is an important part of Diabetes care. Catching the condition early can reduce or even prevent damage to sight.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SCREENING?

  • We will put drops into your that will temporarily make your pupils larger. You may find that the drops stings.
  • We will take photographs of the back of your eyes. The camera will not come into contact with your eyes. The photographs will be sent to an expert for review.
  • The appointment will last approximately 30 minutes
  • Within six weeks, a letter containing your results will be sent to both you and your GP.
